Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young toddler. Ford began to become interested in acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
